Abstract
Background: Hearing and balance depend on closely related peripheral receptors and distributed neural networks. Advances in genetics, electrophysiology, imaging, neuroprosthetics, digital health, and artificial intelligence and robotics are shifting the field toward integrated audiovestibular care.
Objective: To provide a contemporary lifespan overview linking sensory biology and physiology with audiovestibular disorders, precision diagnosis, rehabilitation, implantable technologies, and emerging restorative therapies.
Methods: A narrative synthesis was structured around developmental biology, auditory and vestibular physiology, aging, disease mechanisms, contemporary diagnostics, rehabilitation, artificial intelligence, vestibular implantation, robotic cochlear implantation, and gene therapy.
Results: Modern audiovestibular assessment increasingly integrates objective physiology, imaging, genetics, functional measures, and patient-reported outcomes. Cochlear implantation and vestibular rehabilitation remain established pillars of care, while vestibular neuroprostheses, AI-enabled assessment, digital biomarkers, and gene therapy are expanding the therapeutic landscape.
Conclusion: Audiovestibular medicine is moving from organ-centered diagnosis toward lifespan-based, mechanism-informed, and increasingly personalized care.
